Wild Tales

“Wild Tales” is a workshop dedicated to exploring nature through mark-making, color, and words. Starting from the observation of botanical elements, participants will create a leporello—a folding book that gives shape to both images and stories.

Throughout the workshop, participants will experiment with acrylic painting, which allows for working with bold shapes and strong contrasts, creating a dynamic dialogue between material and color. They will then explore gouache—a matte and velvety painting technique—used to build delicate layers. This will be combined with the masking technique, which involves preserving areas of the paper before painting so that they remain free of pigment and retain the original color of the paper. This process can be repeated multiple times, even by masking areas that have already been painted, in order to create overlays and positive/negative effects.

To achieve this, masking fluid is used—a product that creates a waterproof barrier against paint, which can be removed after painting to reveal the layers underneath.

The workshop is also an opportunity to engage with storytelling: each participant will work on stories, impressions, or narratives interwoven with the world of plants.

• Personal assorted drawing materials (eraser, pencil, etc.)
• Standard A4 photocopy paper
• 4 sheets per person of cardstock, 250/300 gsm, colors of choice, size 50 × 70 cm
• Ruler and utility knife (craft cutter)
• Round-tip brushes in various sizes from 0 to 8 (2–3 per participant are sufficient; high-quality brushes are not required—basic or children’s brushes are fine, as long as they have a round tip)
• A few containers for ink and water, and rags/cloths for cleaning
• Acrylic inks in various colors. Watercolors or other tools you normally use may also be brought for optional additions using the techniques shown during the course.

No prior experience is required; the course is open to anyone who wishes to try the techniques, according to their own abilities. The final project may be completed entirely on paper or, optionally and at the participant’s discretion, scanned in its individual parts and digitized. Those who wish to digitize their work may bring the tools they normally use (laptop with Photoshop or similar software, iPad, etc.), and a professional scanner will be available.
