The Archives of the Štěpán Zavřel Foundation

The online archive is the digital platform through which the Štěpán Zavřel Foundation offers the public a selection of works from its collection, serving as both a resource and a tool to explore the life and work of the artist, as well as the history of illustration in the second half of the 20th century.

This archive, which has made a part of the historical and artistic heritage previously unknown accessible, now represents a valuable repository of memories and a tool for knowledge, constantly updated, and an essential resource for enriching and expanding the Foundation’s cultural offerings: from exhibitions to publications, as well as various educational and outreach activities. In addition to promoting, enhancing, and making the Foundation’s artistic and cultural heritage accessible, the archive also plays a vital role in preserving and safeguarding the work of illustrators.
The result of a meticulous cataloging and digitization process, the archive is organized into four sections: the Štěpán Zavřel Works Archive, the Illustrators Archive, Exhibition Catalogs, and Posters.

Digitization

The digitization of the works in the Štěpán Zavřel Foundation’s collection is one of the main initiatives within the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). This allows for broader access to the Foundation’s heritage, aiming to create a museum experience that is also accessible to remote visitors.

The project involves the application of digital technologies to make the museum’s resources and activities available to a wider audience, through innovative solutions that enhance the quality of the visit experience. Thanks to digitization, the creation of a digital archive of the works and catalogs that can also be accessed remotely, and the development of virtual tours, it is now easier to access information about the exhibited works, enriched with descriptions, high-resolution images, and in-depth details.

The online archive was created with funding from the European Union – NextGenerationEU, within the framework of the PNRR – Digital Transition for Cultural and Creative Bodies (Ministerial Decree n. 385 of 19/10/2022), through the SUB – INVESTMENT 3.3.2 call, which supports the cultural and creative sectors in innovation and digital transition.
