Sarmede, the village of fairy tales

Imagination, creativity, fantasy. A village that is both a physical place and a place of the mind. A corner of the world where stories intertwine, hope is built, and strokes of color form paths that are always new and still to be explored.

Sarmede is all of this: an experiment born from the visionary thinking of Štěpán Zavřel and nurtured by the passion of a community that has put down roots here, then expanding into a labyrinth of blossoming that now envelops the whole world.
An exhibition that, for over forty years, has opened windows onto the world of illustration and children’s literature. An International School of Illustration where artists with multifaceted sensibilities meet, ready to engage in discussions in classrooms or at round tables during symposia.

A foundation that collects and nourishes the seeds left by all those who visit the rooms of the House of Fantasy, the heart of an expanding universe that stretches into the streets and squares of the village of the fairy tale. In the frescoes that decorate the facade, the portico, and the entrance of the Town Hall, and in the original illustrations that form the core of the Štěpán Zavřel Museum.

Sarmede, mural paintings

A magical and multifaceted place to meet
and dream the future, together.

The Mural Paintings

In Sarmede, a unique tradition founded by Štěpán Zavřel continues to thrive: that of mural paintings. The artist began creating them in the late 1980s. Initially, the technique used was fresco, but over time, the master added dry interventions to his works.
From the very beginning, the Štěpán Zavřel Foundation has continued this tradition with the collaboration of the Municipality of Sarmede and private individuals. Today, there are nearly sixty frescoes and paintings created by illustrators, artists, and students of the Sarmede International School of Illustration. The Štěpán Zavřel Foundation offers guided tours of the Štěpán Zavřel Museum and the town’s frescoes for groups of adults and children, families, and schools.
