Basic drawing techniques

From line drawing to tonal drawing

Learning the fundamentals of drawing is an essential step for anyone interested in illustration. A solid grasp of drawing techniques allows the illustrator to bring their ideas to life on paper. This learning process begins with observing reality in order to understand and interpret it through one’s own expressive style.

The course covers the core principles of drawing — line, composition, spatial perception, light and shadow — as well as the use of different media (graphite, ink, fine liners, collage, mixed techniques). Students will develop skills in perceiving contours and shapes, simulating three-dimensionality, and representing space. Particular attention will be given to understanding light and shadow, the contrast between light and dark tones, and how to add depth to drawings. The course also focuses on identifying key details to highlight and cultivating a personal and recognizable drawing style.

Materials and Drawing Tools

Observation and visual perception: analyzing and understanding the subject

Line: line as mark, contour, expressive line, continuous, broken, and varied lines

Form: regular and irregular shapes; figure-ground relationship; positive and negative space

Volume: simulating three-dimensionality in drawing

Hatching Techniques

Tonal drawing: representing light and shadow using chiaroscuro

Halftones and reflections: how to depict them in tonal drawing

Textures and patterns: adding surface character

Three-dimensional space: using visual “tricks” (axonometric projection, one- and two-point perspective, atmospheric perspective)

Composition: creating balanced, dynamic, and original compositions

From drawing to illustration: sketches and studies for an illustrated project

Good manual dexterity.

Technical art materials are the responsibility of the participant.
