Karwan, the journey. A workshop and a collective book

‘Imagine a journey together, discovering lands never before explored.
You will reach wonderful countries, extraordinary animals, places seen only in dreams, fantastic characters. And you will use the linocut technique to create a collective book, a limited edition leporello, as a testimony to your journey and the amazing stages that made it up’.
The Persian term Karwan refers to a company of travellers who join forces with animals and merchandise to undertake a journey together in areas that are unhealthy and uncomfortable for the isolated traveller.
The aim of the workshop is to undertake a journey, where individual and collective experience come together. It is meant to be an exploration and adventure of creatively seeking oneself, giving free rein to one’s own imagination and taking into account that of others.
The course acts as a true voyage of discovery. It suggests being like Baudelaire’s ‘true travellers’, who ‘leave to just leave’ and possess ‘desires that are shaped like clouds’. The real journey begins with the departure, develops hand in hand during and through the journey and, in the end, ‘does not consist in seeking new lands, but in having new eyes’ (Marcel Proust).

During the workshop, a limited edition collective book will be made, in the form of a leporello or accordion book, using the technique of linocut and hand printing.
Participants will also learn how to assemble the individual parts into a completed object/book, learning the nomenclature, gaining concrete experience of each gesture leading to the creation of a self-made book.
Each participant will have their own copy of leporello to take home.

Introduction to linocut: the materials and tools; characteristics of the direct engraving technique; examples.
Presentation of the collective project and explanation of the theme.
Individual study on one’s own portion of the book. Comparison with teachers.
Workshop with realisation of individual stencils.
Colour tests. Study and realisation of the cover with the contribution of each student.
Comparison with teachers.
Final printing.
Assembly of each part of the leporello: assembly of each participant’s pages, plus frontispiece and colophon.
Construction of the collective cover that closes the book.

Basic level of dexterity.

Technical art materials are the responsibility of the participant.
The teachers will provide the specific materials (paper and inks for the book) at a cost of 15 euros per participant to be handed in at the beginning of the course.
In addition, you are asked to bring:
– disposable thin rubber gloves;
– pencils, eraser, sketchbook or sketchbook for drawing sketches
box cutter and scissors;
– 2 sheets of A4 linoleum, 2.5 mm thick (it is important that all participants have the same thickness of linoleum);
– linocut gouges (there are various prices, expensive professional gouges or very cheap ones with a handle and interchangeable tips. Two gouges, one fine and one medium point per participant, are sufficient);
– carbon paper (copy paper);
– a spoon.

It’s recommended to bring a water container, a palette (or plates) for mixing colors, and a cloth for drying.
