Imagined garden

Selection course for Le Immagini della Fantasia 43

The garden is a constant presence throughout art history. The examples are countless: from ancient Egyptian painting to Persian love poetry, from Paul Klee’s gardens to the cinema of Jacques Tati. From East to West, the garden is a shared theme across various cultural traditions.
Its importance in artistic discourse is not surprising: like few other creations, the garden represents the meeting point between the natural world and the human world. A meeting not without tension, which the garden seems to soothe: its paths invite us to contemplate the passage of the seasons, the spectacle of life, and its cycles of splendor, decay, and renewal. A walk in the garden often leads to reflection.
Every garden follows an architecture, an ideal design that is transferred to a physical terrain. In this space, as a result of many variables (temperature, humidity, presence of insects), what is imagined takes a concrete yet unpredictable form—independent of the original plan.
This process parallels the path we will follow during the workshop, where the garden will serve as a model and source of inspiration for drawing and illustration practice. From this journey, we will extract formal and narrative ideas to create images that explore, from various perspectives, the ever-relevant theme of our relationship with nature.
