Spirits of Nature

The course invites participants to enter an imaginary natural world, inhabited by woodland creatures, to explore the expressive possibilities of colour and texture.
Starting with the observation of animals, trees and natural forms, we will work on transforming realistic images, seeking out shapes and characteristics capable of bringing personal characters and settings to life. Colour, texture and composition will become tools for constructing atmospheres, relationships and small narrative worlds.
The focus will be particularly on acrylics, explored through a variety of tools and techniques. Dry brushing, scraping, sandpaper, wax and fine lines will enable us to create overlays, abrasions and surfaces that can be transformed into feathers, bark and other elements of the forest. Even unexpected effects and the traces left by the materials may suggest new directions for the creative process.
As in her artistic practice, Chen Wang also fosters dialogue between different experiences and cultures in her teaching. Her Chinese training and the experience she has gained in Italy intertwine in an approach open to the blending of techniques, materials and languages, where different traditions and sensibilities can generate new expressive possibilities.
In the final part of the course, characters and setting will be brought together to construct a personal scene, seeking a balance between figure, space, colour and material. Those who already have their own project will be able to develop it during the workshop, experimenting with techniques and tools relevant to their research.
