Illustrating a Fairy Tale

The course “Illustrating a Fairy Tale”, conceived by Joanna Concejo for the International School of Illustration, returns for its second edition—this time with an expanded focus on personal projects, to which the instructor will devote special attention during the workshop.

“Many of the stories we know have been illustrated countless times. The various versions of Little Red Riding Hood, The Little Mermaid, Puss in Boots are innumerable!
There are also, of course, stories that are little known—or not known at all!
It’s certainly not stories that are missing from humanity’s legacy.
But how should one approach the task of illustrating a fairy tale?
During the course, we will try to define a possible method for developing illustrations for a story.
From the very beginning, we will work concretely on a book project. We’ll discuss the creative process and important aspects such as the choice of format, the relationship between text and image, storytelling, characters, and visual vocabulary.”

Each participant is asked to bring the materials they wish to use during the course, as the technique is open.
It is recommended to bring a sketchbook and some tracing paper.
Participants are free to choose a fairy tale they particularly love and wish to work on. The instructor will also provide a selection of texts at the beginning of the course.

It is also recommended to bring a container for water, a palette (or plates) for mixing colors, and a cloth for drying.
