The world of Štěpán Zavřel

The space dedicated to Štěpán Zavřel presents some illustrations belonging to two illustrated books translated into Italian for the first time in 2021 by Boohem Press.

“Following the star”, written and illustrated by Štěpán Zavřel, is the story of the three kings. From ahead is long, but they are not afraid. The star will guide their steps.

“Cold tones and warm tones. The journey of the Magi stops among the former. This is the setting for the stages of a journey which, like music, needs its intervals for its movements to have vigour. These are places of sleep, overshadowed by a night-time effect that combines mystery and tranquillity.

– writes Giuliano Zanchi – One wonders what kind of strange journey these Magi, who are supposed to have come from the East, are making, but perhaps this itinerary is more mental than geographical, it is an orderly crossing of ways of being rather than spaces of being”.

“Our wonderful earth”, written and illustrated by Štěpán Zavřel, is the story of the origin of life on earth and its transformation seen through the eyes of sìgirls and boys. It is a time travel of awareness and hope.

“ The meanings are multiple, the sense always symphonic. Human beings walk on one of these passers-by, unaware that they are guests of a land that in turn makes its own journey. Large and small find their place, sharing the dimensions of work and play. In these unicellular spaces, everyone is as if in a nest that must be kept in order”.

Štěpán Zavřel was born in Prague in 1932 and arrived in Italy in 1959, fleeing his homeland. Versatile and multifaceted artist, with international studies of painting, animation, scenography and theatrical costume, in 1968 he created the International Exhibition of Illustration for Children and in 1988 he founded the International School of Illustration. He died in Sarmede in 1999.

The Štěpán Zavřel Foundation was created to continue the path undertaken by the Maste in favor of illustration and illustrators.
