Guest of honor: Gerda Dendooven

Gerda Dendooven is the guest of honor at the 39th edition of the Mostra Internazionale d’Illustrazione per l’Infanzia Le Immagini della Fantasia. In the room dedicated to her, around eighty works will be on display, mainly for illustrated books published in Holland, France, Belgium and Italy.

Brought up in the tradition of Flemish aesthetics, her style is full of surprising accords, originated by unusual proportions and perspectives, immense shapes and exorbitant characters. Each object is a chromatic element that generates energy and relates to the others, producing assonances. Gerda Dendooven works with a pencil, she uses scissors, ink and coloured markers, she shapes the form and follows lines, rhythms, compositions, having fun.

Curator Gabriel Pacheco defines his aesthetic as “an expressive mosaic full of life”.

Synthesis and clarity, chromatic strength and narrative wisdom build bridges of access to images capable of making the reader travel in a joyful and fantastic world.

Born in Kortrijk, Belgium, she trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, where she studied graphic design. She published her first children’s book in 1987, and for a long time led art workshops in museums. She is the author of words and pictures for books and plays for children and young people.
