When type comes into play. Experimenting with books and typography

“There are books that, when you start to leaf through them, reveal unexpected surprises, as if you were holding a small game to be discovered in your hands. It’s not just about turning pages, but lifting flaps, folds, peeking through holes… or encountering unexpected typefaces that are playful too, arranged with freedom and a desire to surprise.”

This workshop is born precisely from the idea of discovery. Through examples and hands-on activities, participants will be guided to explore new expressive possibilities, experimenting firsthand with paper and typography.

The aim is to stimulate creativity: to develop personal projects, find inspiration for educational activities, or simply allow oneself a moment dedicated to imagination and experimentation.

In the first part of the workshop, a selection of books, very different from one another in form and creative solutions, will be presented, offering a rich overview of ideas and possibilities.

Building on these inspirations, the workshop will move on to hands-on experimentation: using simple tools such as paper, folds, cut-outs, and flaps, together with typographic characters and inks, participants will be encouraged to go beyond the traditional form of the book and explore new modes of expression, shifting their perspective further.

Good manual skills are recommended. No drawing ability is required.

Art materials are to be provided by the participant.

  • pencil
  • eraser
  • scissors
  • craft knife
  • masking tape
  • cloth rag
  • glue stick
  • a few simple A4 white sheets (90 gsm)
  • A4 white cardstock sheets (between 240 and 300 gsm is suitable)
  • 2 sheets of light-colored foam rubber (craft foam), without glitter and without adhesive backing (easily found in haberdashery or stationery shops; any size is fine, the color is not important as long as it is light)
  • water-based ink pads, color and quantity of your choice (the most suitable with excellent results are Aladine Kids – Stampo’ Minos, a set of 4 circular pads, available online)
  • small rubber cutting mat (optional)
  • biodegradable cleaning wipes (optional)
